How Being A Fangirl Changed My Life

How Being A Fangirl Changed My Life

This piece originally appeared on Femsplain.com[1]. Femsplain is a community for everyone, powered by personal stories from anyone female-identified.

I was not always a music fangirl.

In fact, I would count 2015 as only my second year as a full-time Stan (if you don't know what a Stan is, refer to Twitter and that one Eminem song). High school was soundtracked by pretty tame stuff, save for a few alt tunes that I discovered through NPR and kept on my iPod because their mere presence made me feel super sophisticated. But as I entered my junior year at college, and the prospect of "real life" seemed to be chasing me down with impressive speed, I relied on music. At first it was a nice form of escapism. Delving into pop-rock albums made me feel as if I was the subject of a John Hughes flick instead of a boring, normal college kid. But the more I listened, the more I figured out how the music was causing a change in me while simultaneously being its backdrop.

I was always a straight-A, preternaturally serious teenager. I didn't go to concerts; I went to debate tournaments. I loved Banana Republic and shunned the hazy music festival summers my friends indulged in. I needed to get into a good college and get a hefty scholarship. I was way too impatient for the "quests for self discovery" that my peers sought through Death Cab and Mumford. It wasn't until I got to college and reclaimed my inner fangirl that I realized how special it is to fall in love with bands, and bands fronted by women in particular. Haim, SZA, Angel Olsen—they all provided the soundtrack for my own change in perspective. I became disillusioned with what I used to want, and instead became enchanted with music and music enthusiasts. You can fall in love with a band quite easily if you love their fan culture as well.

I spent the better part of last August traversing the West Coast, going to Haim concerts and meeting other superfans. In the middle of a packed audience at FYF in Los Angeles, I found a cohort of twentysomething Haim fans. We took turns making Este Haim's signature bass face and chatted about how cool it is that women can unapologetically rock. The smart, passionate, hysterically funny young women that populated the concert crowds became some of my best friends. I changed from someone who harbored a gross amount of internalized misogyny—rolling my eyes at girls in skater skirts and choker necklaces—to a champion of fangirls and everything they love.

I am by no means knowledgeable or infallible when it comes to gender issues. But the intersecting worlds of social media and social justice have opened my eyes to slights against women in music that I just can't abide. I'm glad I've changed—my transition to music fangirl has helped me embrace a pro-feminism culture that accepts and encourages women of all stripes. I'm just continually frustrated that sometimes the music industry seems sluggish to adapt to its consumers' more progressive outlook on gender. I think I'll tear my hair out if I read one more article that attributes the entirety of a woman musician's craft to her hyped male producer. Charli XCX executive produced her slam-dunk of a pop-punk album, Sucker, yet her male producers are given all too much credit for the aesthetic and ideas she so deliberately cultivated. And even when women's involvement in making their music is left unquestioned, they are sexualized or described in the most infantilizing, condescending gendered terms. They are called "innocent," "naïve" and "soft." I have never seen the Haim sisters as anything less than ferocious in their talent and audacity. But they are coded as easy, breezy Valley girls whose luscious locks are written about more than their shredding abilities.

Change can be difficult. I don't feel as sure or steady in what I want anymore, or what my career priorities are. I just know I want to support bands and the people that love them—particularly women in music. I owe most of this change to the fangirls who launch these bands' careers and endlessly encourage them. They form a family of sorts—cheering from the stage barrier and then resuming their lives, striving for their own personal goals while being inspired by the band's bigger ones. But they're also a family that looks out for its own, and that demands change in the music industry. We need writers who respect the young women on stage and in the audience, and labels that trust women's visions for their own work. It's a frustrating yet worthwhile pursuit—talking to any fangirl at a festival or concert will quickly prove that to you.

Cookie's Coming Back! 'Empire' Season Two Officially Has a Premiere Date

Cookie's Coming Back! 'Empire' Season Two Officially Has a Premiere Date

Photo: Getty Images

You'd have to be as crazy as Cookie Lyon to have any doubts about whether Empire would be back for a second season, but now it's official. The show's leading lady, Taraji P. Henson, just announced the show's release date, and September 23rd is just far enough away that you can either a) binge watch the entire first season if for some nonsensical reason you haven't yet or b) re-binge watch the entire first season because the rap drama is just that good.

Though it's only been around since January, the Fox soap opera about the inner-workings of a hip-hop record label drew in more than 16.7 million (!) viewers for its March finale. The second go-round is bound to be even bigger, with a shiny lineup of guest stars, including Alicia Keys, Lenny Kravitz, and Chris Rock, slated to appear.

And that's only the cameos that have been announced. The show's 21-year-old breakout, Bryshere Y. Gray, has been palling around with Justin Bieber[1] lately, and you know Biebs likes to pop up in unexpected places[2]. That alone is reason enough to tune in.

Sound Scout: Meet SOAK, the Confessional Singer-Songwriter We Can't Stop Listening To

Sound Scout: Meet SOAK, the Confessional Singer-Songwriter We Can't Stop Listening To

In music, the phrase "one to watch" gets tossed around a lot. But these days, with so many new ways to consume songs and so many new songs to consume, what make an artist actually worth listening to? In this weekly column, Teen Vogue's resident A&R scouts introduce you to up-and-comers who've got something to say both on and off their record. We're not concerned with labels or throwing out descriptive niceties just to convince you that these artists are "the next big thing." It's in their music and in their own words, and all you need to do is lend a curious ear.

Each featured singer or band is matched with an amazing photographer who has generously donated their time to capture these eclectic acts, because they too believe in their potential. The ground rules for our subjects? Come as you are, no professional styling or makeup, and be ready for a raw black and white guerrilla-style shoot. The portrait is paired with an amateur snapshot shared from the depths of the musician's phone. From pop to folk and R&B to rock, these artists (much like their photographs) are unfiltered, uncensored, and unfazed.

Photographed by Ash Kingston in London.

NAME: Bridie Monds-Watson
AGE: 19
BORN: Derry, Ireland
BEFORE THE PHOTO: Writing was always an outlet for Bridie Monds-Watson, who records and performs under the moniker SOAK. From coping with the narrow minded attitudes of her peers growing up in a small town, to the process of finding yourself in adolescence, and the pain of dealing with her parents divorce. She picked up a guitar at the age of the 13 and has been making music ever since. She self-released her sophomore EP, Sea Creatures, at the age of 16, garnering attention from the industry, and was named "One to Watch" by The Guardian. It earned her a record deal with Rough Trade, and now with her debut album Before We Forgot How to Dream set for release on June 2nd, she's poised to take the music world by storm.

"My dad has played guitar for years and years, and my mom always listened to really good music—a lot of Joni Mitchell, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd," she tells me of her musical upbringing. She cites those bands, as well as newer acts like Bon Iver, Foals, and Grimes, as major influences. "I've always been drawn to people who write great lyrics," she adds. "Like Leonard Cohen—he is such a poet." Bridie is quite a poet herself, with a lyrical ability that belies her youth. Her sound is otherworldly, ethereal but not soft—there is a subtle strength in the way that she sings. Backed by guitar, piano, and drums, her music has a very real quality you don't hear as often in a musical era when synths and drum pads dominate. SOAK's songs stay with you long after the first listen, they dig deep into your soul, as she bares her own.

ON THE HORIZON: "I'm really excited for the album to come out and for people to hear it. It has songs from the last five years, I've just been writing the whole time but it wasn't for an album necessarily. Then it all just came together. I hope that people can empathize with it and see part of themselves in it or relate to a situation that they've been through—I hope they get a lot out of it personally. We're gong to be touring nonstop for the next four or five months. The last three years it's just been me playing by myself, but now I'm going to be touring with a full band, which is exciting. Musically it just makes it possible to do so many more things."

WHO IS SOAK: "I started playing guitar when I was 13. My brother had a guitar in the house that he never played, so I took it and got my dad to teach me. And once I started writing, I never really stopped. Whenever something big happens or something makes me feel strongly in an emotional way, I just feel like I have to write about it. It helps me understand it better and deal with it. I'm really never not writing. I started gigging around where I live, and then after I put out Sea Creatures, people kind of took notice and I started playing all the time. After school or on the weekends, pretty much whenever I could."

WHAT MAKES YOU WORTH LISTENING TO: "My sound has a lot of different influences, some of it is quite poppy but other songs are darker. When I'm writing I don't ever try to keep it one genre or one specific sound. I've already got a lot of songs for the second album that go in a bit of a different direction. Especially as I get better instrument-wise and am learning more. Lyrically though, it's just quite honest—it's me confessing in a lot of ways. I think it's quite different from a lot of stuff that's out there at the moment."

Get lost in SOAK's mesmerizing sound on "Blud."

Jaden Smith Wore a Skirt to Prom, Deserves a Crown

Jaden Smith Wore a Skirt to Prom, Deserves a Crown

Photo: Instagram

It now makes perfect sense that Jaden Smith[1] wore a cape to prom last month. The 16-year-old has suddenly emerged as the superhero of the time-tested teen tradition. This weekend, he attended his second prom of the season. If that alone doesn't earn him a prom king title, someone should demand a recount.

He went to the first high school formal[2] with family friend (and Willow collaborator[3]) Mecca Kalani, and his second date—Hunger Games star (and Lorde pal[4]) Amandla Stenberg—was just as rad.

Unlike a few weeks earlier, when he wore a costume straight out of a Marvel comic book, Jaden went with black skinny jeans, an oversized blazer, fresh Nike kicks, and a white A-line calf-grazing skirt. Not technically a superhero uniform like last time, but pretty heroic nonetheless.

She looked like a superheroine in her own right, wearing a gorgeous metallic gown with matching silver-threaded dreads.

Jaden's pushing sartorial gender norms, one prom at a time. Here's to hoping he has a few more on his calendar—we can't wait to see what else he might have up his sleeve (literally speaking...just look at those metallic gloves[7]!).
