Birth Control Access Just Got Easier for Women in Oregon

Birth Control Access Just Got Easier for Women in Oregon

Oregon, the beautiful home of our girl crush Carrie Brownstein[1] and chicken coops[2] that cost more than our rent, is about to be the first state to make an entire year's supply of birth control available to women at once.

That's right—no more racing to the nearest pharmacy before closing time to refill your prescription before a vacation or a night with a new boy-toy...at least for our friends in Oregon. Lumbersexuals[3] and their lovers can pick up an annual supply of birth control with one trip to the drugstore starting in January, after getting an initial three-month supply filled first.

Outside of Portlandia[4], much of Oregon is rural, and women living in those area might have found it difficult to obtain their regular prescriptions[5] without regular access to a pharmacy. Legislators said the bill was passed to reduce unplanned pregnancies for women who can't pick up prescriptions or visit doctors as often as some insurance plans require.

As Governor Kate Brown said as she signed the legislation[6], "it has a simple premise that I whole-heartedly believe in: increase access and decrease barriers."

But another bill might not even require women to have a doctor's note in order to obtain birth control in the first place—a state senate committee[7] just cleared a bill that would allow women to bypass a doctor's prescription by answering a 20-question assessment with their local pharmacist.

These advancements come on the heels of a recently published study in the journal Contraception[8] that found that the number of unintended pregnancies could drop as much as 25 percent if birth control was available over the counter.

If the measures in Oregon are a success, there's a chance we could see a similar effect take place across the rest of the country. After all—if it worked for flannel, why can't it work for family planning?
