The Trend We Thought Was Gone for Good is Making a Major Comeback

The Trend We Thought Was Gone for Good is Making a Major Comeback

Every few seasons, we see a resurgence of trends from decades past. The '70s are having a major moment right now—all suede everything, hip-hugging flares—as are the '90s—crop tops, shredded jeans, and flannels galore. But one item we never really expected to make a major comeback was the fanny pack.

The accessory saw its first wave of popularity in the late '80s, coming in a variety of bright colors and bold patterns.—it was a serious statement piece. AdWeek even named it the "Hottest Product of the Year" in 1988. But the trend was soon adopted by dads and tourists, no doubt for its practicality: a hands-free way to carry the necessities when your pockets just aren't enough, and quickly fell out of favor among the style set, until recently.

Over the last several years, the once-dreaded fanny pack has been gaining favor once again. American Apparel[1], with its penchant for bringing back popular styles from the past, began selling them in all different fabrics, from denim and leather to neon nylon and corduroy. They started popping up at music festivals[2] (as festival style started to become a thing), and quickly gained favor among a specific set of young women, as Business Insider[3] points out: sorority girls.

When I first read that, I have to admit, I laughed a little. But then I thought back to my own college experience (during which I was in a sorority), and realized that statement was actually quite accurate. In four years filled with game day shirts, custom coozies, and matching hoodies, our fanny packs were by far the most coveted item. It wasn't something we used every day, but for football games and the occasional day party, it was always a go-to. The convenience really can't be beat.

As I graduated from college, thinking that my fanny-pack-wearing days were behind me, the accessory started to catch on with major designers in the fashion world. Diane Von Furstenberg and Louis Vuitton were early adopters, sending updated styles down the runway back in 2011. And in 2014, the arbiter of downtown cool, Alexander Wang, sent out his own version—a sleek leather design with chunky hardware—as did Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel[4]. The most-recent iterations for 2015 have come courtesy of Rag & Bone and Marc by Marc Jacobs[5], who showed them worn slightly higher, around the waist. At this point, it's safe to say the fanny pack is back. Now whether or not you decide to welcome it back into your own wardrobe, that's up to you.
