June 21st is International Yoga Day, so we met up with Rachelle Tratt, founder of The Neshama Project[1] and instructor at The Yoga Collective[2] in Los Angeles. She's taught stars such as Rashida Jones and Lisa Kudrow a few of her key moves, so we asked her to show us a simple, 5-minute yoga flow to start the day.
"When you first open your eyes, instead of reaching for the phone, what if you took five minutes just to pause and breathe," she says. "Then connect with your body through movement, followed by weaving it all together by setting an intention for the day ahead?"
Start with child's pose:
Then, lift through your chest and heart a few times while you breathe:
Flow into Cat Cow:
Then create circles with your shoulders and hips with three deep breaths—called Lion's Breath:
Let out your roar!
Next is downward dog—just hold and breathe while you open up your entire body:
From downward dog, move into 10 or more rolling vinyasas.
To finish? Go to the back of the mat for a forward bend:
Then do spinal rolls up and down as your reach your arms upwards:
End standing tall with your hands at your heart.
Enjoy International Yoga Day!
