The 5 Sweetest Father-Daughter Movie Moments

The 5 Sweetest Father-Daughter Movie Moments

This weekend is Father's Day[1] (consider this your last-minute reminder to grab a gift[2]!), and to kick off the celebrations, we've rounded up five of our favorite movie scenes featuring dads and daughters. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll want to go give Dad a big bear hug. Enjoy!

Father of the Bride

After all the laughs throughout this Steve Martin classic (especially that scene with the hot dog buns!), we start to tear up and get sentimental as George Banks walks his Annie down the aisle. But the moment that gets us sniffling harder than John MacKenzie at the ceremony is when Annie calls her dad right before taking off on her honeymoon, just to say "I love you."

Little Miss Sunshine

This scene warms our hearts and exercises our laugh muscles on so many levels: First, adorable Olive (Abigail Breslin) dedicates the routine to her beloved grandpa, who taught her the routine and whose just-deceased body is in the trunk of the family van. Then, dad Richard (Greg Kinnear) defends her stripper-ish performance to the pageant director, calling it "kicking ass." But our hearts kind of explode when Kinnear hops on stage, tackles the MC, and starts gyrating right alongside Breslin.

My Girl

Let's be real, this entire movie is just made up of moments that make us feel all the feels (two words: Thomas J.)—including when Harry Sultenfuss (Dan Akroyd) explains to his daughter Vada (Anna Chlumsky) that her mother's death was not her fault.

Crazy, Stupid, Love

Ditching the mushy-gushy for a moment, this might be our favorite daddy-daughter movie moment ever. Steve Carell tackling Ryan Gosling for dating his daughter, and John Carol Lynch simultaneously tackling Steve Carell for being the love interest of his daughter, makes your dad's first encounter with your significant other seem totally normal and tame.

Beauty and the Beast

We see dads coming to their daughters' rescue plenty of times, but Belle taking her father's spot as prison in the Beast's castle makes our insides melt in a whole new set of ways. (Writer's note: I've got a personal soft spot for this movie, since my dad and I used to watch it together all the time when I was younger—and danced to "Tale as Old as Time" together at my wedding. Happy early Father's Day, Dad!)
