Don't worry about running out of drive space on your Mac, just learn to check it out.
Especially now that most new Macs — especially laptops — have flash-based storage, the average amount of space on the Mac's boot volume is smaller than it has been in past years. If you're worried that you might be running out of space on your Mac[1], OS X makes it easy to figure out how much space you have left.
Your Mac's hard drive should always have at least 10 percent of its space free. Not only do you need it to save files, but your Mac uses free space for other things. Your Mac periodically writes out files to disk like virtual memory repositories, logs, and other content. What's more, the apps you run will need space to write out content as well.
If space gets too small, your Mac will throw out a warning. But it's a good idea to stay ahead of that by having at least a general idea of how much space is available.
- Click on the menu.
- Select About this Mac.
- Click on the Storage tab.
- Check how much free space you have on your Mac.
