How to Find a New Favorite Farmers' Market

How to Find a New Favorite Farmers' Market

Does it seem like more farmers' markets are popping up every time you turn a corner? You're not imagining things. The number of these markets across the country nearly tripled from 2006 to 2014. That's fab news for anyone who loves fresh, local produce—but are you taking advantage of the offerings in your 'hood?

Even if there's a nearby stand you hit up for berries, green juice, and fresh-cut flowers every Saturday, there might be other options you're missing out on. That's where a new directory[1] available on the USDA's website comes in. The database makes searching for all the locations close to you a snap, and it's an especially awesome tool to keep in mind during summer vacays—to help you find fresh fruits and veggies on the go, no matter where your travels take you!

Of course, there are more options in big cities, and the coasts have a higher percentage than the rest of the country. Still, you might be surprised at the number of markets near you—the USDA database includes 8,260 nationwide. (To be included in the list, markets need to have at least two vendors and be held in a consistent location.)

To give it a go, just enter your zip code and see a list of markets that pop up within a certain radius. The directory gives you location, directions, hours of operation, and even types of payment accepted. Consider it Google Maps for clean eating.
