Is there anything more sickeningly satisfying than peeling things off your various body parts? See: your chipped nail polish, the fascinating phenomenon that is Baby Foot,[1] your sweat-drenched leggings after a good Bikram session…the list goes on. Newly added to my favorite peel-able things (because obviously that's a list worth having) is Golden Door Spa's Peel-a-Way Masque[2] ($72), a shimmery golden mask that dries and allow you to peel it off your face in one go. In case you didn't know, Golden Door Spa[3] is a celebrity-favorite oasis in San Marcos, California with an award-winning spa; and that award-winning spa has just released at-home versions of the much-loved products they use during their signature facials. This magical mask is one of them. Upon opening the container, you will be greeted with what looks like liquid gold. In fact, you may spend so much time admiring the beauty and texture of it, you might forget to actually put it on your face. Word of advice: put it on your face. The consistency is slightly sticky, almost like honey, and leaves behind a sheer, iridescent film on your skin after you apply. I like to imagine that I look like an ethereal, other-worldly being, but most likely I just look like a crazy person wearing gold Saran wrap on my face.
After applying, you can instantly feel the mask working. My face felt tingly, then grew to a gradual burn—but a good burn, where you can tell the ingredients are exfoliating, brightening, and sloughing away dead skin cells. Made with various fruit acids and brightening ingredients like vitamin C, the mask promises to refresh your skin and give you a glowing complexion by literally lifting away impurities. I waited the suggested 20 minutes, then began to peel the mask away, gleeful and determined to get it off in one piece—I succeeded. I held the Hannibal Lector-y mask up in front of me and immediately texted a photo to my boyfriend, feeling like a proud mom (his response: "That's scary.") So thrilled was I to be holding a flimsy gold sheath with my very own eye and mouth cutouts before me, that I almost forgot to examine my complexion. But luckily, I happened to catch a glance of myself in the mirror—my skin looked so clean. Maybe my dark spots weren't noticeably lighter, and my pores were definitely still noticeable, but overall, my complexion felt clearer and more even—oh, and way, way softer, too. Masking has never been more fun, and doing this peel-away mask usually ends up being the highlight of my week (which says a lot about this mask, and also about my life). Yes, it has a hefty price tag and you might be able to find other masks that deliver more potent, noticeable results—but do they look like liquid gold and peel off your face in one piece? Didn't think so.
