There Are 66 Rules to the Perfect Like-Worthy Selfie and This Photographer Has Found Them

There Are 66 Rules to the Perfect Like-Worthy Selfie and This Photographer Has Found Them

As we've learned before,[1] taking a good selfie takes a lot of work. That's why 32-year-old photographer Willem Popelier of the Netherlands has created a photo book called The Do-It-Yourselfie Guide[2] showcasing the Dos and Don'ts he's picked up after analyzing thousands of self-taken pics. The results are equal parts hilarious and enlightening.

As he told The Daily Mail,[3] he started collecting self-portraits in 2009 before the word "selfie" became an everyday part of life and watched the patterns form from there. A few of his insights: Cleavage shows well if you prop yourself up on a bed or on the floor. If you're not Kim Kardashian, don't take a photo of your butt (belfie), and know your "good side." It's the side of the face that looks the most balanced and symmetrical. Always use that side for selfies. Generally the good side is the left cheek.

You can pick up the book at shop.new window.nl[4]. And in the meantime, here are a few rules we've come up with over the years here at Lipstick:

If you're going to post a selfie to your Instagram feed, there's a perfect time to do it[5].

To avoid a double chin, avoid this angle. [6]

Good lighting is key.[7] And if you can't find it, it's better to abandon ship than get overly creative with filters.

Here's Kim Kardashian's trick to getting a good shot that involves a mirror[8].

Do NOT use the front-facing camera on your phone.[9] Seeing yourself may make posing easier, but the lower-resolution will downgrade your photo quality by quite a lot.
