We know that, unfortunately, many people are not into the idea of legalizing same-sex marriage[1]—but one couple has taken their views to the extreme, threatening to end their own 10-year-union if Australia offers its citizens marriage equality.
Nick and Sarah Jensen have been getting a lot of attention in recent days for their pledge to divorce if same-sex marriage were legalized, saying they'd split "as a matter of conscience, [and] refuse to recognize the government's regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnization of same sex couples," in the Canberra City News[2].
"This has been a big decision for my wife and I. Some will accuse of us being bigoted or too hateful to share. But this couldn't be further from our intentions," Nick Jensen wrote in his op-ed. "The truth is, 'marriage' is simply too important. It is a sacred institution, ordained by God … Any attempt to change the definition of marriage by law is not something in which we are able to partake."
To which we cry hypocrisy: You can't protect the sanctity of marriage as an ideal by dissolving your own union, breaking vows you promised to uphold until death do you part. To the Jensens, it would seem, marriage isn't sacred—it's after all.
But more so, do they really think this drastic measure will make any difference? People split these days—about 30 percent, according to recent numbers[3]—for reasons we should be discussing, such as financial strife, extramarital affairs, and a serious lack of communication skills. One couple who, by their own account, love one another but simply can't stand the thought of legalized equal rights? Who cares? Not us. #goodbye.
