Prom is one of the, if not the, biggest nights in a high schooler's life, so it makes sense to go all-out when it comes to hair and makeup. For most girls, that means a trip to the local salon or makeup counter. For Olivia King, a senior at The Brearley School in NYC, it meant a glam session with Nick Barose, makeup artist to such effortlessly gorgeous actresses as Lupita Nyong'o, Hailee Steinfeld, Zoe Kravitz and Alicia Vikander. Nick is a family friend of Olivia's and has known her since she was a baby. "Nick used to babysit for me, and when my parents came home, I'd have this beautifully painted face," says Olivia. We bet she won every Halloween costume contest. Lucky girl!
So, when Olivia started to prep and plan for her first "and probably last!" prom, Nick was on speed-dial. "Nick is such a professional that it feels strange that he's doing MY makeup for a high school event, but I'm honored that he wanted to do this. I love seeing the beautiful work he does with so many actresses I admire." Although Nick spends most time dolling up A-list celebs for the red carpet, it turns out prom night isn't so different. "The red carpet is kind of like a grown-up prom. It can be stressful, but I always remind myself that it's essentially just like prom. We're there to make people look pretty. You might as well have fun with it," Nick says. We couldn't agree more. Nick rose to the prom challenge—and on a budget, no less! All the products in Olivia's makeup moment added up to under $130. Cheap and chic has never looked better.
