Broad City's Abbi and Ilana on Being "Imperfect" Role Models

Broad City's Abbi and Ilana on Being "Imperfect" Role Models

Broad City[1]'s Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer have created some of TV's most badass feminist moments—just watch how they handle a street harasser[2] to see what we mean—but their characters aren't exactly what might be considered role models. But that's why we love them—they're relatable and they make mistakes often sometimes. And in a sit-down with Katie Couric for Yahoo News, the two had the perfect take on why it's OK to be nontraditional role models.

When Couric asked, "Do you worry about the whole role model thing?" Glazer answered, "We do have certain ethics, definitely, when we're writing." "Especially drug things, Jacobson added. "At the same time, we—it's hard because we want to tell these stories."

"Less often we see women with this kind of platform to have their voice, but I think there's something to being an imperfect role model," Glazer said. "Because it's, like, women can do things that we want to emulate, but also they can mess up, you know?"

After Couric adds that it's becoming more common in pop culture to not have the traditional expectations of women, Jacobson said: "The show's being praised for having a strong female friendship. And it's like, that should be everywhere. Why is this not the norm? It's kind of ridiculous."
