If you're not already following @flourshop[1] on Instagram, we'll give you a minute to catch up. From rainbow cakes to flower-adorned cookies, every item is almost too pretty to eat. Almost. Amirah Kassem[2], the mastermind behind the account and the awe-worthy treats, quit her day job in fashion to pursue her flour-inspired dreams, and quickly became the industry's go-to confectioner.
This weekend, Amirah has teamed up with Topshop[3] to dole out desserts at a special pop up shop in their 5th Avenue location in NYC. Each day through Sunday, shoppers can pick up a little something special—from glitter-covered cake pops to ice cream cone cakes. We chatted with Amirah to get the scoop on her delectable goodies, tips for making your own desserts, and her summer faves!
How did you decide which treats you wanted to give away at the pop up shop? Is there a story behind any of them?
I tend to daydream in a whimsical, edible land so the first thing that popped into mind was glitter! What better than sparkly cakeballs, which then led to childhood memories of spinning sugary pink clouds aka cotton candy! I also wanted to create bite size treats that remind me of summer: ice-cream cone cakes and mini burgers, which instantly lead to emojis! Smileys, lollipops, and hearts came to mind so I ran with the inspiration and built a 16-foot gumball and lollipop emoji wall! There really is no limit with Topshop!
What does the Topshop brand mean to you?
FUN! Young, playful and everything nice! The minute you walk into the store you get into that feel-good dance mode.
What was the first Flour Shop dessert you attempted, and how did it turn out?
A rainbow cake—and it was an instant favorite! There's something so special and fun about surprises. Having a fully sprinkled cake is fun but then cutting into it only to find 6 vibrant colors just screams celebration.
What is a relatively simple dessert that is great for bringing to summer barbecues?
Watermelon cakes! I love the play on foods and putting a fresh twist on a dessert cake by simply cutting a watermelon into the shape of a cake and using other fruit cutouts as decoration!
What songs are on your summer playlist?
Major Lazer's "Lean On", Katy Perry "This is How We Do", and "Barbie Girl" by Aqua!
Do you have a favorite summer memory?
Apart from ice cream?! [laughs] Water guns! When I lived in Los Angeles one of my friends and I spent the day shopping for the perfect super soakers then painted them in different patterns using metallic colors.
What are your five summer essentials?
Friends, smiles, a speaker, ice-cream and Topshop overalls[4]!
