Why Emma Stone Turned Down the All-Female Ghostbusters

Why Emma Stone Turned Down the All-Female Ghostbusters

When Paul Feig's female reboot of the Ghostbusters[1] was first announced, plenty of dream castings hit the interwebs—but a constant among many (OK, nearly all) of them was the inclusion of Emma Stone[2]. So, when the cast was revealed back in January[3], as delighted as we were at the selections, we couldn't help but be ever so slightly disappointed—or, at the very least, surprised—that Stone's face wasn't included in Feig's picstitch.

But it turns out that Stone was pursued heavily for the film, and she was the one to say no thanks, according to a recent interview with WSJ Magazine[4]. Here's her reasoning:

"The script was really funny," she told WSJ. "It just didn't feel like the right time for me. A franchise is a big commitment—it's a whole thing. I think maybe I need a minute before I dive back into that water."

But don't count her totally out just yet. She shared with WSJ that she would be open to appearing in a non-Ghostbuster capacity, perhaps as even a villain. "That would be amazing," she said. "I would love that."

As much as we'd love to see her in Ghostbusters, as a villain or otherwise, her next project is kind-of amazing: a movie musical with Ryan Gosling, directed by Whiplash's Damien Chazelle[5]. Stone will sing and dance in the film, called La La Land, while Gosling will play a jazz pianist and her lover—a.k.a. movie perfection.
