3 Functional Fabric Trends Your Workout Wardrobe Needs Now

3 Functional Fabric Trends Your Workout Wardrobe Needs Now

Caroline Gogolak and Katie Warner Johnson are two Harvard-educated ballerinas who ended up in the fashion and fitness industries, respectively. The two synched up to start Carbon38[1], the go-to online retailer for niche fitness brands with a strong fashion focus. We tapped this very tapped-in healthy duo to share their favorite fitness trends, diet tips, and workouts with us.

One of the major perks of running an activewear company is getting an early preview of the next big trends. Some of our favorite brands have been using some non-traditional fabrics to give your wardrobe staples a unique update in their summer collections. Here are our top 3 favorite fabric trends to look out for this summer:

Mesh

mesh Summer is all about staying cool while looking sexy, and nothing does that better than mesh. Whether you want to stay covered up with a sexy mesh detail in a pair of leggings, or show off your abs by layering a sports bra under an all-mesh hoodie or top, this trend is a head-turning way to show off your best assets. Two brands that are really taking this trend to the next level are Michi and Alala. Our picks: A pair of black leggings updated with sexy mesh details, or a funky statement jacket done up all in mesh.

Shine

shine Matte fabrics have been the gold standard in activewear since the beginning of yoga pants, so it's time to change it up! A shiny fabric turns a basic legging into something eye-catching that really highlights your curves—and makes it easy to transition from the yoga studio to the street. Koral is a master of this liquid look. Their super popular Lustrous capris are a great investment, as they look just as great in "off duty" outfits and don't feel heavy in the heat.

Neoprene

neoprene Neoprene's moving beyond the beach this summer. It offers stretch, cushioning and it's incredibly quick-drying, making it the perfect choice for sweaty workouts. We love how Lisa Lozano elevates the bathing suit game with her new-look neoprene bikinis, and some of our favorite takes on the fabric come in the form of cozy hoodies and striking jackets to slip on after class from brands like The Upside and Alala.
