Emma Watson and the HeForShe campaign have raised some very thought-provoking and powerful conversations about gender equality recently, and the latest news shows that the movement is working as well as spreading.
The activist actress tweeted out a link[1] to a piece stating that men in Iceland are the most mobilized HeForShe nation in the world. In fact, one in 20 have signed up for the campaign and pledged to take action for gender equality. How great is that?!
If you'll recall, Emma had specifically called out guys in her U.N. speech[2] during the launch of the campaign last year. "We want to try to galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change and we don't just want to talk about it," she had said. "We want to try and make sure that it's tangible."
Well, it turns out many of the guys of Iceland heard her call and answered. Eight thousand six hundred men vowed to help create a lasting change that involves shifting attitudes, behavior and harmful stereotypes. While that number might not seem like a lot, it is admirable considering the population of Iceland. The author of the article went on to explain that currently 34,331 British men have joined the campaign, but if the UK were to have one in 20 sign up, that number would have been over 1.5 million.
We have to applaud all the guys (no matter what country they're from) who have pledged to help this movement.
