Anytime you need more motivation to get your butt to the gym, just think of Harriette Thompson. The 92-year-old from Charlotte, NC, became the oldest woman to finish a marathon[1] yesterday, clocking the Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon in 7 hours, 24 minutes, 36 seconds.
This time around marked Thompson's 16th time crossing a marathon finish line. Thompson didn't pick up distance running until she was 76, and she's run the San Diego race every year since 1999 except once. Why'd she skip that year? She was undergoing cancer treatment.
That's right, as if this woman weren't kick-ass enough, she's also battled cancer; Thompson wears leggings when she hoofs it to cover wounds left from treatment for her squamous cell carcinoma. Even more incredible, she's raised more than $100,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to boot. Feeling lazy yet?
If Thompson's story inspires you to lace up your shoes and get moving for a good cause, check out one of these top fundraising/training programs: Team in Training, DetermiNation from the American Cancer Society, or Fred's Team.
