The boys might be back in town, but a lone Spy is stealing their thunder. Before you bolt for Litchfield via your couch on this summer Friday (here's where Orange Is the New Black left off, by the way), catch up on all the biggest deals that went down this week.
Spy tripled Entourage's take at the box office Melissa McCarthy's action comedy made $30 million while the "we don't drink Jager crew"[1] pulled in a little over $10 million. This was a straight-up battle of the sexes, and Spy won it resoundingly—but there's more to the story. It also indicates a shift at the box office; maybe, just maybe, moviegoers are thirsty for more original comedies and fewer microwaved sequels. (Also, Entourage should've happened three years ago or not at all. They just waited too long.)
Odd Mom Out premiered on Bravo Between this and Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce, the network that made its millions on reality catfights is quickly becoming the new home of well-rounded, smart female protagonists. Show me another company that would greenlight a series starring a woman in her 40s who's never acted before. Jill Kargman is nailing it and so is Bravo—now, can they please also produce her "late night in the morning" talk show for moms idea?[2]
Raven Symone joined The View as a full-time co-host The View remains a work in progress—Rosie in! Rosie out! Rosie IN! TWO Rosies! Rosie out :(. Its latest brainstorm: Add a co-host under 40. Thank you, we've been asking for ages.[3] Symone, who's 29, is the youngest permanent co-host since Elisabeth Hasselbeck joined the show at age 26 in 2003. Now, if they'd just add Cristela Alonzo—who's killed it as a guest co-host and is freed up after her ABC sitcom's cancellation—we might start DVR'ing it.
Chris Hemsworth signed onto Ghostbusters. He'll play a receptionist[4] And whoosh goes the gender paradigm. Paul Feig is our patron saint, for real.
Get the Bellas back together—Pitch Perfect 3 is happening Universal is in talks with screenwriter Kay Cannon[5] about turning this into an aca-trilogy. (OK, that didn't quite land, but we've got plenty of time to brainstorm new acs-puns before the third movie comes out.)
Jessica Lange is departing American Horror Story Cue horror-movie "Noooooooo!" Lange's explanation[6]: Basically, it's just time to move on.
Elizabeth Banks is circling her next directorial project While Pitch Perfect 3 gets assembled, the summer of Banks continues apace: She's in negotiations to direct Red Queen, a major-budget adaptation of the YA novel about a world in which normal mortals have red blood and the elite and superpowered have silver. A young woman with red blood but extraordinary abilities rocks the kingdom, and she's quickly shoved into a royal marriage that keeps her on lockdown—but she plans a peasant uprising from her new post. In other words: The Katniss Middleton Story. It'll keep us warm now that the end of The Hunger Games is near.[7][8]
