While Kim Kardashian was announcing her second pregnancy[1], over 100 of your favorite television stars were at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the 5th Annual Critics Choice Television Awards[2]. From Gina Rodriguez to Cat Deeley, we caught up with them all!
Gina Rodriguez[3] currently shares the cover of The Hollywood Reporter with comedic actresses Amy Schumer[4], Ellie Kemper[5], Lena Dunham[6], and Tracee Ellis Ross[7], and she opens up about women in Hollywood and shares some pretty startling behind-the-scenes stories[8]. But for everything we criticize about Hollywood, what do they get right? According to Rodriguez, plenty: "I think Hollywood is getting everything right, and I don't think it's doing anything wrong. I think what's happening is the perspective is being opened, and we are raised a certain way and have our blinders on. Slowly the blinders start to get pulled away, and you start to realize there was never anything wrong with you, but there is a need for knowledge in other cultures and religions, sexual orientation, all of that. I think what's happening is [that now] we're starting to take off the blinders and that's a very exciting moment."
Speaking of exciting moments, the Jane the Virgin[9] heroine was immediately hopping a flight to New Orleans as soon as the awards show wrapped because she begins filming her new movie, Deep Water Horizon, this morning. The film is about the BP oil spill of 2010.
Rodriguez' Jane co-star Ivonne Coll stunned in a MaxMara dress and earrings from her native Puerto Rico that "reminded me of the sea there." The actress is getting used to all the attention from her critically-acclaimed show, but one thing surprised her: "I didn't think American audiences would be used to seeing a show that uses subtitles when the characters speak Spanish, but they get so invested!"
Keeping it all in the family, Jaime Camil (a nominee for Jane the Virgin) said that they'll start shooting season two at the very end of August. Until then, he was just happy to be hanging with the TV critics at the awards, which is not something you usually hear actors saying. However, Camil has good reason: "The critics have been very, very good to us!"
Sadie Calvano, who plays Anna Faris[10]' on-screen daughter on the CBS hit sitcom, Mom[11], shared the news that she just got accepted to Occidental College in Los Angeles, thanks to a little help from her TV boss Chuck Lorre. "He wrote my letter of recommendation, but I was a nervous wreck asking him! I had the most anxiety I've ever had in my life that day!" So what was her plan of attack? "After the table read one day, I went up to him and said, 'Chuck, do you have a second? I really want to talk to you in private for a minute.' I pulled him aside, and he was honored and so supportive. His first question though was, 'You're staying in California though, right?' [Laughs]"
When Chuck Lorre[12] stopped by to talk with us later in the evening, he said he was more than delighted to tackle such an assignment. "How easy was that, to rave about this young lady? She's really wonderful, and any college would be lucky to have her. I just wanted her to go to school locally!"
As for Calvano's shooting schedule while at college, that won't interfere with her role on Mom. "I'll be taking classes part time, but I'm not going anywhere. I'm so thrilled to be a part of Mom, and it's so special," said the young actress.
Gemma Baker, who created Mom with Chuck Lorre, also praised him for making her dream a reality. "You just keep doing the work and doing what you love. I happened to get extremely lucky. Chuck gave me an incredible opportunity when not many people might have given me a chance on an unknown writer, but I had been doing the work, so when I got this incredible opportunity, I was ready." Added Chuck: "And she was ready!"
Alison Wright (clad in Zac Posen) stars on The Americans, but it was the cast of Jane the Virgin that stole her heart. "Never have I been in the company of so many actors that I'm dying to meet. I'll be fan-girling! [Jaime Camil] from Jane the Virgin right now next to me? I'm dying!"
The Middle's middle child, Eden Sher[13], was certainly not channeling Sue Heck on the blue carpet, and as long as the double-stick tape she used did its job, she was just fine with that. "I got this [dress] in La Perla! I was there to buy actual undergarments, and I saw this dress and it was in the ready-to-wear section, and I said, 'How ready-to-wear is it?' They said it was! I was like, 'Oh, this is a dress for public wearing?' and [the employee] was like, 'Yeah!' So I got it. I may have had to double-stick tape it up. [Laughs]" What about that sassy new haircut and color? Sher actually chopped off her long brown hair the day after The Middle wrapped it's sixth season a couple months ago. "I knew I wanted it short because I needed a change," she says. "I was pretty sure when they did the initial cut, it would be emotional, but she cut it and I was like, 'Yeah! Do it more! Get it away! Cut it off!'" The new color was a more recent development. "I went blonder yesterday!" said the energetic star. "Yeah, I'm definitely not channeling Sue Heck tonight!" Speaking of Sue Heck, it's a character (thanks to Sher's authentic portrayal) that has made her a hit among critics. "These people, who are literally paid to judge you, are judging me in a positive way. It's like, 'Never stop!' I can't ever have another job now just in case. I would rather go out knowing people like me than risk having them not like me! I can retire now!" she joked.
For American Crime's Caitlin Gerard, it was not only her first time attending the Critics Choice Awards, but her first awards show ever. "You know when Cinderella first wakes up and birds come to her window and they're singing? That's how it was this morning!" she joked. "Sounds glamorous, right?!" Although Gerard doesn't know if she'll be part of season two near year, she was still thrilled the anthology series got picked up. "I'm very happy about that. I can't wait to see what they're going to tackle next. You know it's going to be something very happy-go-lucky!" she deadpanned.
Gillian Jacobs[14] (in J. Mendel) couldn't have been more proud to attend the awards show. "This is the only group that gave Community an award, so I'm happy to be here," she explained. Jacobs stars in several projects this year, but one thing she'd like to do more of is direct. "I'd like to keep making films about women in technology cause I feel there's a real lack of them currently."
The legendary Linda Lavin (nominated for The Good Wife) has seemingly worked with everyone in Hollywood, including some felt friends. If you've ever seen the iconic Muppets Take Manhattan, you'll remember Lavin as Kermit's doctor when he was hit by a car and woke up with amnesia. So what was it like working alongside an amphibian? "Well, first of all, [the Muppets puppeteers] were the most generous people. They really guided you through this process of talking to a felt person that was on the end of someone's hand or stick and to be real with them. To be real with the Muppets was really important. I did The Muppet Show in London before I did the movie, and my big break-through was because Piggy and I shared a dressing room. She was having a fit, and Frank Oz, who played Piggy, came up to me, and I said, 'Piggy, you have to calm down! You're going on stage in a minute!' And she said, 'My dress is ripped!' She was crazy! Frank said to me, 'You know, you can slap her' and I said, 'I can slap Miss Piggy? So I'm the first person to abuse Miss Piggy?' and he said 'Yes,' and I did! Her hair swung around and just like in the movies of the '40s she said, 'Thanks, I needed that.' [Laughs] It was such a great moment! I also did a sketch with the Swedish Chef, who didn't speak anything but gibberish! They work very hard and made me feel like a million bucks. And I slapped [Miss Piggy's] face!"
So what advice would Lavin give to young actresses or recent graduates just starting out? Turns out, not much of anything. "I choose not to give advice because I think everybody has to follow their own path," she admitted. "I share my experience, and I do that by saying, 'This is what I did. I don't know if it will work for you, but..' I believe that work brings work, so do everything and anything that isn't morally reprehensible to you. That's what I did, and then you meet more people and find out about other opportunities. And hang in."
Constance Wu[15] has been the breakout star of ABC's Fresh Off the Boat with good reason. "I think it just shows that people are hungry for not just cookie-cutter, neutralized stories, but ones that really have a unique take and celebrate Asian identity as opposed to trying to erase it. Our show tends to do that, and we couldn't be more proud."
Wu brought along her filmmaker/actor boyfriend, Ben, and praised him as "the most handsome, kindest man in the world. We met at a Christmas party three years ago when we were both too poor to go home, so our mutual friend threw a Christmas party for all of us poor artists, and that's where we met!"
Scott Bakula led CBS to a ratings win last season with the launch of NCIS: New Orleans, but he was most excited to talk about his St. Louis Cardinals defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers yesterday afternoon. Still, the star was quite grateful for a breakout first season, which he acknowledged after we talked baseball. "We learned a lot this season. For a first year show, we really succeeded on a lot of levels. We have so much to explore and so many avenues to go down, which is really exciting."
Broad City[16]'s Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson flew in to Los Angeles for less than 24 hours to attend the show, but admitted that it's never enough time for them. "We gotta make it more often because it's so chill here!" explained Jacobson. So what was on the itinerary in those 24 hours? "Earth Bar!" declared Glazer. "It's just a smoothie place! And Tender Greens! They need to get it in New York!"
Restaurants aside, what other advice could the comedians dish out? When it comes to succeeding as a comedienne, Jacobson advised aspiring writers and performers to "create things and find your voice. It will develop and get better, and it will come if you just keep doing it." Added Glazer: "The more unique your voice is, the more it will stand out. The truer people are to themselves, that authenticity does rise to the top."
Brooklyn Nine-Nine's Chelsea Peretti[17] (in a two-piece Viva Aviva design that Peretti dubbed "so cool!"), presented with co-star Terry Crews. Their co-star Andy Samberg[18] will host the Primetime Emmys[19] in September, so will Peretti throw some jokes his way? "I'll try to sneak some by him, but I haven't really thought about that yet!"
When talk turned to binge-watching television shows, Peretti admitted that she loves watching with her boyfriend, Jordan Peele of Key & Peele. So how did the two meet? On Twitter! "He wrote me a private message because we followed each other. He said he liked this web series I made in New York and then we just started talking. On our first date, we tried to go Sizzler, but it was closed! We got rejected from Sizzler! They shooed us away from the window! So we went to this other place, and we wound up running into an entire improv team that knew us both. It was so unromantic, but then it became this running joke, so it was really fun!"
Shark Tank's Lori Greiner (in a sparkly Herve Leger) shared her advice for a successful appearance on the Mark Burnett-produced reality show. "Know your pitch, have it down, and do it again and again and again so you don't have to think twice about it when you get out there [in front of us]." Speaking of her fellow sharks, Greiner loved getting to see Robert Herjavec[20] compete on Dancing with the Stars[21] this season. "He was so great, and Kym [Johnson] was so lovely," she shared.
By the way, for all your DWTS fans, Robert and Kym were reunited this weekend! Check out photo Kym posted on her Instagram below!
