You know those days when you just feel so… blah? Well, a German physicist is saying that he might have found the secret to happiness. Dr. Stefan Klein, who wrote the book The Science of Happiness[1], claims that writing down the things that make you smile every day in a diary could be the perfect cure for those bad moods.

He likens the skill of finding happiness to learning a foreign language—we have to train ourselves how to do it. That's why he says taking a few minutes each night to reflect on the good stuff works.

"The object of the exercise is to simply make you more aware of these moments to know yourself better," Dr. Klein said[2] during a speech at a science festival recently. "Even in states of severe depression, there are moments of happiness, but the person suffering it doesn't believe they have these moments in their lives."

We've all heard of the power of positivity before, and this exercise is just a variation of that. Looking at the good things in your life—especially when they're written right there in front of you—makes you see that, yeah, life is pretty good.

So, the next time you're feeling down, forget dwelling on the negative stuff—that's no fun anyway. Try this trick instead and let us know if it works!
