Friends, there's been another spotting of the '90s visible lip liner[1] look out in the wild, this time on Aussie actress Jade Albany at the down-under premiere of Inside Out.
Now, we appreciate her enthusiasm for the retro look and all, but this is a bit aggressive. Believe it or not, visible lip liner can look very 2015 if done right. Here's an example we spotted in spring[2] on Jennifer Lopez:
This is a much more wearable—and updated—way to go for the trend: The lip liner is a shade that's only a half-step darker than your lip color and applied in a very, very thin line that you almost have to squint to see. You want to hint at a border around your lips, not outline your mouth in a black marker and pretend you're about to audition for Baywatch and have a Zima with a Jolly Rancher dropped in after.
A few things to keep in mind: It's easier to pull off with nude lip colors, but it can be done with rich one too, as Kim Kardashian proved two years ago [3](so ahead of the times on this one, she was). Just remember subtle is your friend here. One way to assure your line stays thin is to draw on your pencil border first. Then you can paint over it with a lipstick-loaded lip brush to blend and hide as much or as little of the liner as you like.
